This conference empowered educators to integrate immigration-focused literature into their classrooms by exploring the migration experience through storytelling. Participants gained tools, including the CUNY-IIE Guide for PK-12 Immigration Literature, to teach culturally responsive curricula that inspire students to learn, act, and advocate in a way that centers our shared humanity. 

In the second part of this policy webinar series, CUNY-IIE held a discussion on improving teacher and leader preparation to educate and support immigrant-origin students in New York State. The webinar featured a panel of experts, including educators, education officials and school administrators.

CUNY-IIE hosted a webinar that examined the barriers undocumented immigrants face in pursuing education careers and explored solutions to increase access to teacher certification and employment in New York State.

CUNY-IIE hosted a launch of Lessons from a Dual Language Bilingual School: Celebrando una década de Dos Puentes on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at The City College of New York.

The book showcases the lessons, successes and challenges of starting, growing and sustaining a fully bilingual school.

CUNY-IIE presented UndocuEdu’s Art Exhibition, “Belonging Beyond Borders: Nuances Exploring Immigration Identity, Community, & Joy Exhibition.” This exhibit focused on the joyful yet complex experiences of immigrant communities and individuals.

This workshop was tailored for individuals who educate immigrant youth and seek guidance on programs tailored for immigrant youth, with a focus on fostering advocacy and self-advocacy skills.

CUNY-IIE hosted a virtual launch of Knowing Silence: How Children Talk About Immigration Status in School by Dr. Ariana Mangual Figueroa on Tuesday, May 7 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at the Graduate Center.

This groundbreaking book offers a fresh perspective on citizenship and education, providing educators and researchers with invaluable insights into the lived experiences of immigrant-origin students.

This special event featured the premiere screening of “Beyond Status: Inspiring Stories of Resilience and Advocacy in Education.” After the screening, a panel of CCNY alumni led a discussion on the role and importance of student organizing for equitable access to education and resources.

During this interactive workshop, students explored crucial aspects of college inclusivity for undocumented students, equipping them with the necessary tools to make well-informed decisions about their future educational endeavors.

CUNY-IIE held the premiere of its Not Too Young: Immigration in Elementary Schools video series on December 5, 2023. This video series showcases the school-wide projects produced by three elementary schools in New York City and Western New York.

CUNY-IIE invites you to the educator modules launch on translanguaging and trauma-informed practice. The modules provide educators of immigrant-origin students with the foundational information to integrate these areas into their pedagogical approach. 

At this event, we amplified conversations about the experiences, challenges, and needs of aspiring and in-service immigrant and undocumented educators. We also shared resources to support and guide immigrant and undocumented students pursuing a career in education. We held space for meaningful dialogue and engaging workshops on opening pathways for immigrant educators!

CUNY-IIE and the NYSYLC hosted the virtual launch of the guide titled “A Framework for Immigrant Liaisons” on Monday, March 27 from 6:00pm - 7:00pm ET.

CUNY-IIE hosted the virtual launch of the report titled “The State of Undocumented Educators in New York” on Tuesday, February 28 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm ET. 

The report highlights the experiences of DACA recipients and undocumented professionals in the field of education. Based on focus groups and a survey of undocumented immigrants and DACA recipients, the report describes the challenges and conditions faced by undocumented immigrants to obtain a degree in education and work in their field.

CUNY-IIE hosted the virtual book launch of Living, Learning and Languaging Across Borders: Students Between the US and Mexico by Tatyana Kleyn on Thursday, March 3 from 5:00pm - 6:30pm ET.

The book focuses on migration and education policies and pedagogies grounded in the fluid lives of transborder students between Mexico and the United States, while the photography presents their experiences in a visual dimension that words alone cannot capture.

CUNY-IIE brought together a panel of transnational and transcultural organizers whose work fosters conversations across borders at the intersections of immigration and education. Our panelists included South Asian Youth Action (SAYA), Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador (CISPES), Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala (NISGUA), In Cultured Company, and NYC activist Mitchel Wu.

Organizing at the Intersection of Immigration and Education brought together a panel of community organizers and activists from New York state who are working at the intersections of immigration and education. The groups represented included: Flanbwayan, the NYSYLC (New York State Youth Leadership Council), RAISE (Revolutionizing Asian American Immigrant Stories on the East Coast), and ImmSchools.

UndocuART at the Intersections of Immigration and Education was a mini-workshop event showcasing a panel of artists/scholars working within education and immigration. Artist/scholars led mini-workshops using a variety of methods (poetry, digital art-making, collage, etc) and engaged participants in creating their own artworks to be shared digitally via the CUNY-IIE Gallery.

This workshop provided updated legal information, especially in light of the changes under the Biden administration. It featured members of the Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS) team, which brought together educators and folks working with immigrant students, to support young people in areas such as pathways to legal status and resources for undocumented youth.

The opening workshop introduced the people, vision and grounding principles of CUNY-IIE and launched our four professional development modules on immigration and education.
